Knowledge Bowl Tournament

No Comments 12 April 2012

The Knowledge Bowl, this event has been known for its insanely challenging and unforgiving questions, this is where the school’s geniuses come to battle it all out against themselves, and where all the normal people just don’t have a clue.

The elimination rounds have concluded with three teams out of the original 8 making it through to the next stage, These elimination rounds consisted of 30 minutes of competitiveness, tense moments and decisive and quick discussions in-between the competing groups. The teams had to answer questions prepared for the competition by Vice Captains Sami Bulushi and Marwan Ruqaishi, and as you can conclude from this , the questions asked were…. unusual.

The teams which made it to the semi-finals were Dolphin team 1, Dolphin team 2 and Hawk team 2.  These teams then competed against each other to determine the final victor and the runner-up positions. Dolphin team 2 were named as the victors while Dolphin team 1 came in as a close second and the Hawk team ironically had the fewest correct answers.

The final Knowledge Bowl event took place in front of  secondary and primary students in the Auditorium, the winners of the knowledge bowl went head to head with a previously organised team of teachers. the Dolphin team, however, was obviously not enjoying the best of days as the score was, by far, not in their favor.  The participants were then given their awards and well deserved medals for contributing to the event and achieving great results.

This event has been excellently organised by Vice Captains Ali Al-Zaabi, Noor al Khonji, Safia al Mawali, Eithaar al Barwani and Shireen al Busaidi in collaboration with our very enthusiastic supervisor, Mr. Ali Qubtan.  Of course none of the Vice Captains had any idea what they were doing at first but it all worked out for the best.

Model United Nations 2012

3 Comments 02 April 2012

Just last Sunday, 16 students and I returned from a 3-day Model United Nations conference in Dubai. The majority of us participated in such conferences before, but for a few, it was the first time. The first time is always scary. A little nerve wrecking, or at least that’s how it was for myself. I don’t think I can recall a day when I was quieter than I was on those few days of my first debate. Fortunately, one does tend to grow out of all those bad conference habits! I sure did!

The DIAMUN conference was the third conference I attended during the two years that I have been apart of The Sultan’s School MUN ECA. Surprisingly enough, I still haven’t lost interest! One simply can’t go wrong with MUN. As boring as it may sound, its probably one of the best experiences you’ll ever have in your high school years (not to mention that universities LOVE to see it on your application). Not only do you get to wear your formal attire and dress up, but you also get the opportunity to meet new people that have come from different countries with different cultures and backgrounds, and to me, that’s the best part of the conference.

Future IB students, you get a lot of CAS hours from this and also, like I stated before, universities love MUN-ers! Not only that, but you get to  develop your communication skills with others, you improve your confidence and public speaking skills and mainly, your debating skills.

As a group, I loved each and every one of my fellow DIAMUN-TSS-delegates. We had some fun times and outings, quite crazy – but not too crazy – if I may say so myself. Experiences like these are definitely never forgotten and should not be missed out on.
