Just last Sunday, 16 students and I returned from a 3-day Model United Nations conference in Dubai. The majority of us participated in such conferences before, but for a few, it was the first time. The first time is always scary. A little nerve wrecking, or at least that’s how it was for myself. I don’t think I can recall a day when I was quieter than I was on those few days of my first debate. Fortunately, one does tend to grow out of all those bad conference habits! I sure did!
The DIAMUN conference was the third conference I attended during the two years that I have been apart of The Sultan’s School MUN ECA. Surprisingly enough, I still haven’t lost interest! One simply can’t go wrong with MUN. As boring as it may sound, its probably one of the best experiences you’ll ever have in your high school years (not to mention that universities LOVE to see it on your application). Not only do you get to wear your formal attire and dress up, but you also get the opportunity to meet new people that have come from different countries with different cultures and backgrounds, and to me, that’s the best part of the conference.
Future IB students, you get a lot of CAS hours from this and also, like I stated before, universities love MUN-ers! Not only that, but you get to develop your communication skills with others, you improve your confidence and public speaking skills and mainly, your debating skills.
As a group, I loved each and every one of my fellow DIAMUN-TSS-delegates. We had some fun times and outings, quite crazy – but not too crazy – if I may say so myself. Experiences like these are definitely never forgotten and should not be missed out on.
